Math Worksheets

Creating math worksheets at home

As children learn math in school, they will engage in a variety of activities to reinforce their learning both in school and for homework. Many of these activities are based on math worksheets, important papers containing math problems that help children to put their new knowledge into practice. Another common term for a math worksheet is a “ditto.” Math worksheets, or dittos, require that children practice important math concepts over and over, helping them to truly understand their lessons.

As part of a child’s after-school homework activities, you might consider developing your own math worksheets. If the child is studying multiplication, create a worksheet with a series of multiplication problems on it. If he is learning about problem solving, come up with some interesting word problems to tackle. You can even incorporate them or their friends into the word problems, helping to engage them in the activity.

If you need assistance in generating these worksheets, you can look to a variety of sources for assistance. Often, children’s math books will contain end-of-chapter activities or appendices that recommend engaging problems to try with children. You might also consider purchasing special software designed to generate math worksheets. This software can tailor a worksheet to a child’s current subject and problem type. There are also free worksheet generators online. For additional support, speak with the child’s teacher about getting extra worksheets for children to study at home.

When grading children’s worksheets, it is important to help them understand that grading is designed to encourage improvement and not to highlight weaknesses. Have children grade the worksheet with you helps them understand why they answered certain problems incorrectly as you grade. Make grading an interactive and supportive experience, encouraging children to excel on future worksheet activities. Done correctly, math worksheets can be a positive experience for your children and an activity that will reinforce their education.
