Math Lessons
Developing math lesson plans for your child
At some point in your child’s education
you may find it necessary to develop math lessons for them.
Whether you have made the decision to home school a child
or you simply want to improve their math skills over a summer
vacation, lesson plans are a helpful tool. Math is a cumulative
subject - the understanding of new information is dependent
upon the understanding of information previously learned.
Developing lesson plans will help you teach children important
math topics using proper reinforcement and activities.
The development of your lesson plan should depend heavily
on two things: the math subject level a child is ready to
study; and the most effective method of learning for the child.
You can find many pre-made math lesson plans available online
for free though you may want to have a teacher or tutor review
them to ensure that they are appropriate. You can also purchase
special software to assist you in building a strong lesson
plan for children. You may consider asking the child what
they would like to learn about and how they would like to
do it. Letting children have a say may increase their interest
in the subject at hand. If the child enjoys word problems,
you can incorporate more word problems into the activity portion
of your math lesson plan.
Remember that lesson plans should be guidelines for a child’s
study, and not rules. If children seem to be falling behind
in a particular subject area, rearrange part of your lesson
plan to accommodate further study. If children do not seem
to respond well to a particular activity on your plan, substitute
it with a more worthwhile activity. With math there is almost
always another way to teach the information and achieve the
same result. The children’s understanding and success
of the math concepts is the most important part of your lesson
plan.
