Math Help
Understanding math homework so you can help
Helping your child with math homework can
often prove to be a challenging task. This could be because
the subject matter is entirely beyond your understanding or
you have concerns that your methods of teaching will conflict
with those taught in school.
If the subject matter is difficult for you to comprehend,
you can read your child’s textbook or borrow a textbook
from his or her teacher to try to familiarize yourself with
the math being taught in class. You can also go online and
search the web for the math topic to familiarize yourself
with the subject. Another option is to introduce your child
to a peer study group or to a professional tutor.
You can help with math homework by being consistent with
the teaching concepts that your child is receiving in school.
You should ask his or her math teacher to see lesson plans
and homework at the beginning of the school year. It would
also be a good idea to meet with the teacher to discuss the
teaching methods they utilize in class and which teaching
methods and concepts work best for your child. If your child
is a visual learner, consider drawing examples of math concepts
to study. If he or she is an auditory learner, try reading
word problems out loud before attempting to tackle them. There
are also several math activities and math games that can help
your child with math homework.
In school, your child will encounter a series of standardized
tests that measure their skill in math. These tests can cause
anxiety in many children. To avoid this issue, familiarize
yourself with the standardized testing schedule. Approach
the subject with your child, acquaint them with the testing
process, and help them to study for the tests. Preparing them
for standardized tests will not be difficult if, along the
way, you have helped them with their math homework. Your child
will find that math homework contains math problems similar
to those that appear on standardized tests. |
